Melany C. Hughes, MD, MPH, FACS
Dr. Melany Hughes is a 2005 graduate of the Howard University College of Medicine. She completed her General Surgery internship and residency in 2010 at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC and received a Master of Public Health Degree in Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness (MPH) from Tulane University (TU) in 2012. While at TU she received a research appointment with the World Health Organization's Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (WHO-CRED) in Brussels, Belgium. Her work focused on the analysis of both man-made and natural disaster-related trauma and injury patterns; resulting in contributions to several multi-national collaborative research projects and publications. Following completion of the MPH degree, and with a continuing commitment to public service and humanitarian work, she served as a General Surgeon and Medical Officer with the U.S. Indian Health Service; providing healthcare to the Hopi and Navajo Nations in northwest Arizona. She then spent several years as a private practice surgeon with Hafa Adai Specialist Group in Guam, USA.
Dr. Hughes strives to practice " socially-conscious" general surgery and upon returning from Guam to the mainland, she spent the past five years as Vice Chair of Surgery with Stony Brook Medicine, Director of Global Surgery working to modernize surgical care in Mozambique and was Chief of Surgery at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, a critical access hospital, in Greenport, NY.
In concert with the American College of Surgeons, the World Health Organization and Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Hughes continues her global work with current education and surgical training projects in Myanmar, Ethiopia, Zambia, Rwanda and Guatemala. Hughes is a multi-generational Washingtonian and due to family needs and love of the region, she has returned to the DC area. She has joined Mid-Atlantic Surgical Group, a private practice group on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where she specializes in general, robotic and trauma surgery.
"I feel that human health, well-being, & disease outcomes are inexorably impacted by the environment and access (or lack thereof) to resources. Health, longevity, and disease outcomes should not be solely reflective of personal wealth. There are so many 'cures' for diseases, simple surgical procedures, and health maintenance practices that never reach the most needy of such interventions. I want to do my part to help provide that access."
